Overview

Workato sells itself as the control and execution platform for enterprise AI, and the two halves are literal product lines: a Control Plane that governs agents with role-based access, audit, and approval gates, and an Execution Plane that does the work through integration, automation, API management, EDI, and IDP under the Orchestrate banner. The homepage now leads with The Platform to Govern and Scale Enterprise AI, built on what the company calls the number one iPaaS. Scale claims are specific: 14,000+ applications reachable per the homepage, over 1,000 connectors per the docs, Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for iPaaS for the eighth time including the March 16, 2026 edition, and more than 50% of the Fortune 500 as customers. The agentic layer is where recent development has gone: Agent Studio for designing and deploying agents, Workato Genies as role-based agents for IT, Sales, HR, Support, and Marketing, Acumen positioned as an AI data scientist for operational insights, Otto as an early-access AI teammate inside Slack, and Enterprise MCP, which exposes governed MCP servers to Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, Cursor, and any MCP-compatible agent. Pricing is fully demo-gated: the public pricing page contains no numbers, and the docs describe usage-based pricing with a platform edition fee plus a usage fee in a single common billing unit, across four cumulative editions (Standard, Business, Enterprise, and Workato One, the last adding agentic capabilities). Older figures quoted around the web, including a widely repeated $833 a month starting price, appear nowhere on Workato's own site. This is enterprise territory, competing with Boomi, MuleSoft, and SAP Integration Suite rather than Zapier or Make: worth it when automations number in the dozens, governance is a requirement, and procurement can absorb an annual contract.

How to install

1. No self-serve install and no self-serve signup: the documented entry point is the Schedule a demo form at workato.com/request_demo, which asks for a name, work email, and what you are trying to do, then prepares a demo. No trial length is published anywhere on the site.
2. Once you have a workspace, the docs' getting-started path is: read What is Workato, learn key concepts, create your first recipe, check supported browsers, then complete the Workato Foundations courses.
3. Training is the genuinely free part: the Workato Automation Institute's certificate programs (Automation Pro I, II, and III) are free with a valid account, with 10,000+ graduates and 20,000+ certificates claimed, and the company caveats that free access may not last.
4. The developer portal ships a Workato CLI for macOS, Windows, and Linux and positions Workato Enterprise MCP as the build surface; there is no documented SDK and no permanent free developer sandbox.
5. Product updates are published as Product Scoop and connector roundups at workato.com/product-hub/whats-new, including a recurring MCP Monday series, rather than a classic changelog.

Requirements

Procurement first: there is no published price, no free tier, and no self-serve workspace, so the real requirements are a business case and a security review. Workato cites SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, PCI DSS, and GDPR compliance and claims 99.9% uptime. Plan for environments, role-based access, and deployment pipelines if more than a handful of people will own recipes, and budget training time through the free Automation Pro courses.

Best for

Enterprises that need dozens of integrations under governance: environments, role-based access, and audit are first-class, the connector library covers ERP and HR systems such as SAP, NetSuite, and Workday that lighter tools skip, and Enterprise MCP plus Genies put AI agents under the same controls. Marketing ops inside a 1,000+ person company is the sweet spot.

Not for

Small teams and simple automations: no published price, no self-serve signup, and no documented free tier make a five-recipe Zapier-class workload an expensive mismatch. Also not for buyers who need a number to put in a budget line before talking to sales, since the pricing page publishes nothing.

Review notes

Assessed from workato.com, docs.workato.com, and the product-hub updates page in September 2026; we have no Workato workspace and have not built a recipe there. The public surface is marketing-heavy but unusually precise about analyst positioning: the Gartner page names the report (Magic Quadrant for Integration Platform as a Service, Worldwide), the publication date (March 16, 2026), and the four analysts.

Corrections against our earlier record. The $833 a month starting price we quoted appears nowhere on Workato's site; the pricing page has no numbers at all, and the docs describe a platform edition fee plus a usage fee in one common billing unit. Our 14,000+ app connectors claim conflated two published figures: the homepage says 14,000+ applications while the docs say over 1,000 connectors. And the headquarters is Palo Alto, not Mountain View.

The AI naming was the biggest correction. Copilot, recipe suggestions, data mapping, and anomaly detection are not documented today, and Copilot no longer appears anywhere in the docs sitemap. The current named surface is AIRO (a multi-agent system with Foundry, Memory, Connect, and Acumen components), Agent Studio, Genies, Otto, AI Workflows, and Enterprise MCP.

Entry is procurement-first, and that shapes who can even evaluate: no self-serve signup, a demo form as the only door, and no published trial length. The free path that does exist is education, through the Automation Pro courses, plus the Workato CLI on the developer portal.

Where the record held up: all eight connectors we listed (Salesforce, Slack, SAP, Workday, NetSuite, ServiceNow, Snowflake, HubSpot) appear in the Workato Integration Library, with SAP and NetSuite present in several API variants each.

Verdict

The enterprise default for governed automation and agent orchestration: unmatched breadth, demo-gated pricing, and a cost conversation you cannot have until procurement engages.
